To be Reviewed Annually
The Governing Body of Uphall Primary
Our school respects the right of freedom for individuals to practise their religion. So, we have in the past reviewed our statement dependent upon when Ramadan falls within the Seasons.
This year as Ramadan begins from 28th February 2025 and will continue for 30 days approximately with fast lasting between 12-13 hours we are happy to support parental decision of our Year 5 and Year 6 children to fast during Ramadan on school days and we will make special arrangements for fasting children at lunchtime. Â
As a Rights Respecting School we also respect the children’s right to an education and to physical well-being.
If your child is to fast on school days, please discuss with them that going without food and water for long periods of time may lessen your child’s ability to concentrate on their learning and possibly make them feel unwell. And so, this decision should be made with careful consideration of both religious practise and wider wellbeing at school.
If the school is concerned at any point during a child’s fast, parents/carers will be contacted.
Fasting in this age group is optional, and we will remind children they should not apply peer pressure to fast as children can embrace Ramadan in other ways as previously advised to the school from the Muslim Council of Britain and a local and respected Imam such as: –
- Reflecting on the plight of people less fortunate than themselves
- Working on good deeds
- Charitable Acts e.g Food Contributions for Ifthari
We will, of course, look at this situation on an annual basis, and personal circumstances.
