Essentials Curriculum


The aim of our curriculum is to engage pupils in their learning through topics that are exciting and meaningful, that challenge and inspire the children of Uphall Primary School.

We are a multicultural school committed to inclusion; our goal is to develop the whole child so that each young person in our care becomes a confident and independent learner who wants to come to school; who sees learning as an enjoyable experience; who is engaged because they see the usefulness of what they learn and makes links between subjects and the world; who is equipped with the skills and knowledge they will require in the future.

Our curriculum reflects several aspects to help us to achieve our goal:

  •  A creative approach to planning and delivery that incorporates and embeds key aspects of the National Curriculum especially English.
  • Enquiry led learning with an emphasis on the subjects, children answer questions which have a specific subject focus such as History or Geography.
  • Development of personal, moral and spiritual values, including respect for others through carefully taught values and the consistent implementation of the school ethos.
  • Promotion of British values, encouraging children to become more active citizens within the school community and beyond.
  • Learner’s independence.
  • Enrichment opportunities where teaching and learning can take place beyond the classroom.
  • Rights Respecting School values in everyday school life, enabling children to become responsible active citizens. 

Our curriculum provides broad, balanced and relevant learning experiences. Learning is enhanced and topics brought alive through immersion days, going on visits or having visitors into school. We provide first hand learning experiences which enable pupils to acquire linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technical, human and social, physical and artistic knowledge, understanding and skills. All topics start with a hook and end with a celebration. Our pupils learn about topics which focus on different subject areas. Each topic is led by an enquiry question, which children will answer through the course of the topic. We have a thematic approach to teaching and learning where the text links to an overarching theme that is studied throughout the length of the topic. Every year group will experience up to six Imaginative Learning Projects in a year.

All subjects where possible are linked to the theme, however we recognise that some subjects need to be taught discretely Maths, P.E., Science, Spanish and Religious Education are taught outside of the topic.
