Curriculum Intent: Languages

We provide our pupils with a high-quality Spanish provision in order to foster their curiosity of different cultures around the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in an other language and to understand and respond to it’s speakers, both in speak and writing. Our curriculum leave them with firm foundations for further learning in languages and to open the door to studying and working abroad.

Characteristics of a Linguist

  1. The confidence to speak with good intonation and pronunciation.
  2. Fluency in reading.
  3. Fluency and imagination in writing.
  4. A strong awareness of the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.
  5. A passion for languages and a commitment to the subject.
  6. The ability to use language creatively and spontaneously.
  7. An independence in their studies and the ability to draw upon a wide range of resources.

Implementation

Our pupils should be able to organise their knowledge, skills and understanding around the following learning hooks:

  1. Read fluently
  2. Write imaginatively
  3. Speak confidently
  4. Understand the culture of the countries in which the language is spoken

These key concepts or as we like to explain them to children – learning hooks, underpin learning in each milestone. This enables pupils to reinforce and build upon prior learning, make connections and develop subject specific language.

Speak confidently
This concept involves using key vocabulary and phrases to verbally communicate ideas.

Understand the culture of the countries in which the language is spoken
This concept involves the background knowledge and cultural capital needed to infer meaning from interaction
